Protecting Artificial Sports Surfaces from Frost During Winter Months

Winter poses a significant challenge for artificial sports surfaces, as freezing temperatures can leave infill hard, slippery, and unsafe.

Even well-maintained pitches are vulnerable to frost, and snow can linger on frozen surfaces, making them difficult to clear without causing damage. Playing on frozen pitches is not only unsafe but can also displace infill, compromising long-term performance.

Preventative measures can significantly reduce these risks. One effective solution is the application of PDV (Pure Dried Vacuum) salt, which contains minimal impurities and will not harm the surface. Applied correctly, it helps protect the infill and maintains playability, acting as a preventative treatment rather than a de-icer. Regular applications and brushing help ensure the surface remains safe and functional throughout the winter season.

To protect surfaces during winter, it is essential to maintain good drainage and inspect drains and inspection chambers daily. Avoid any maintenance until the top infill layer has thawed to prevent further damage. PDV salt should be applied at around 50g per m² and brushed in evenly, with repeat applications as necessary depending on weather conditions.

Technical Surfaces supplies all the essential equipment to support safe winter maintenance, including PDV salt in 40 x 25kg bags, wide-coverage spinner spreaders, lightweight drop spreaders, T-grip shovels, and bi-directional Snoblade push ploughs. These tools allow facilities to apply preventative treatments accurately and efficiently, reducing the risk of frozen, unsafe surfaces.

Once conditions improve, the surface should be brushed to reset the infill and ensure even distribution. It is critical to avoid rock salt or other non-soluble products, as residues can block drainage and reduce surface performance. Following these guidelines helps maintain both safety and longevity of the pitch throughout winter.

Technical Surfaces has extensive experience guiding facilities through winter maintenance, providing expert advice, equipment, and preventative treatments. With decades of expertise, our team ensures artificial sports surfaces remain safe, playable, and protected against frost and freezing conditions.
