Macclesfield FC 3G Pitch

Technical surfaces were recently appointed to carry out remedial works to the playing surface at Macclesfield FC. The required works were vital in improving the playing surface to ensure the site remained FIFA Quality PRO certified for the upcoming season.

Client Overview

Macclesfield Football Club is a semi-professional football club based in Cheshire, competing at the second level of the English non-league football pyramid

Unlike many professional and semi-professional football clubs that utilise natural grass as their primary matchday surface, Macclesfield FC plays, and trains on a high-quality 3G pitch.

The Importance of the FIFA Quality Pro Certification to Macclesfield FC

The FIFA Quality Programme for Football Turf provides an internationally recognised standard for artificial football pitches, with the FIFA Quality Pro mark representing the highest performance level within the programme and being designed specifically for professional-level football.

Achieving FIFA Quality Pro requires the playing surface to meet stringent requirements including playing performance, player interaction with the surface, ball interaction, safety, durability and quality assurance.

The Challenge

Prior to Technical Surfaces’ involvement, the surface had been prepared for testing by an alternative contractor. Unfortunately, the approach adopted failed to deliver the performance outcomes required for the surface to meet the necessary testing criteria.

As a result, the club sought alternative specialist advice and engaged Technical Surfaces to undertake a detailed review of the previous test data and approach. It was clear that a completely bespoke programme of remedial works was required to address the surface performance issues and ensure the surface could continue to achieve the FIFA Quality Pro standard.

Our Response

Mobilising one of its specialist in-house teams, Technical Surfaces quickly commenced the programme of works. Over a two-day period, the team utilised industry-leading SMG machinery to undertake a bespoke package of maintenance and remediation works designed to restore surface performance. Supported throughout by a dedicated in-house testing consultant, live performance data was used to monitor progress and refine the approach where necessary, ensuring the works remained focused on addressing the identified issues and achieving the desired testing outcomes.

The Result

Following the completion of the remedial works, the surface was independently tested by Sports Labs as part of the FIFA Quality Pro certification process. We are pleased to confirm that the pitch successfully met the required standards, securing FIFA Quality Pro certification.

Client Feedback

“Technical Surfaces were recently engaged by Macclesfield FC to undertake remedial works on our playing surface to ensure it achieved the required FIFA Quality Pro standard.

Prior to their involvement, the surface had failed to meet the necessary requirements, and an alternative contractor had been unable to provide a successful solution. Technical Surfaces were brought in to assess the situation, and implement the corrective measures required.

The Technical Surfaces team worked tirelessly to carry out the necessary works and successfully restore the surface to the required standard. Their professionalism, technical knowledge, and commitment to delivering results were evident throughout the project.

Following completion of the works, an official FIFA-accredited test was conducted, and we are pleased to confirm that the surface achieved the pass required to meet the FIFA Quality Pro standard.

We would also like to extend our thanks to Sports Labs for their valuable assistance and support throughout the project. Their contribution played an important role in helping to achieve this successful outcome.

On behalf of everyone at Macclesfield FC, I would like to express our sincere appreciation to Technical Surfaces and Sports Labs for their hard work, dedication, and expertise in helping our club prepare for the new season ahead.”

Support for Surfaces at Every Level

While the Macclesfield FC project demonstrates our experience working with professional football facilities, our expertise is by no means limited to professional clubs.

Technical Surfaces also works with grassroots football clubs, schools, academies, local authorities and leisure facilities that require advice, guidance or practical support with their artificial playing surfaces.

Every pitch is different, with its own unique challenges and requirements. Whether you are managing a newly installed 3G pitch, maintaining an established surface, addressing issues identified through testing, or simply seeking expert advice, our specialist team can help you understand the requirements and identify the most appropriate course of action.

We firmly believe that a considered, data-driven approach is essential when assessing and managing artificial sports surfaces. However, data alone does not provide all of the answers. The real value lies in understanding what the data means and applying years of industry expertise to determine the most effective solution.

Surface performance characteristics are closely interconnected, and maintenance interventions rarely influence just one aspect of performance. A process designed to improve one performance parameter may inadvertently have a negative effect on another if the wider implications are not fully understood. Successfully managing an artificial surface therefore requires not only accurate testing data, but also the experience and technical knowledge to interpret the results and understand how different maintenance processes interact with one another.

It is this level of understanding that sets Technical Surfaces apart. By combining detailed performance data with decades of practical experience, we are able to develop balanced, tailored maintenance strategies that improve overall surface performance while safeguarding compliance with the relevant FA, FIFA and governing body standards.

We can provide the knowledge, expertise and practical support needed to help your pitch achieve and maintain the required standards throughout its lifecycle.

If you need advice or support with your artificial sports surface, certification requirements, or are looking to better understand the performance of your pitch, contact Technical Surfaces today to discuss how we can help.
